Рукописные буквы русского языка — зачем они нужны и почему ими пользуются
Like many other languages, the Russian language includes one more letter-writing style called cursive or, sometimes, script or joint-up writing. Letters of this style are characterized by flowing lines and are connected to each other, which helps write faster.
Your Russian studies may or may not include learning Russian cursive letters — it is completely up to you.
The main disadvantage of not knowing the Russian cursive — you won't be able to read texts written with this style. Other than that, the lack of this knowledge will not prevent you from learning Russian language and literature or communicate with the native speakers of Russian.
You need to know, however, that this writing style plays an important role in the Russian culture and social life. Learning this writing style has always been an integral part of the Russian school education and this norm does not change with the advance of technology. Study of this writing style is mandatory because it is beleived to stimulate brain activity, develop motor coordination and improve thinking intensity.
All native speakers of Russian can use this style and, in fact, write with it in everyday life.
So, cursive writing is a cultural treasure that endures naturally. Its use is a mark of an educated individual, and an elegant handwriting style is viewed as a hallmark of sophistication.
It is worth noting that Russian universities' programs for foreigners always include cursive writing.
